How do I find a school?

Are you looking for a school for your child?

There are many different types of primary schools in Rotterdam. When looking for a school for your child, the most important thing is that the school is a good fit for your child.

How do you go about finding the right school?

Step 1) Take a look at this map to see which schools are located near you.

Step 2) Learn more about these schools by, for example, visiting their websites,

Step 3) Call one or more schools and request a guided tour or a meeting.

Step 4) Have you decided which school you want your child to attend? You can now register your child.

It is important that you register your child in writing.

If your child is between the ages of 6 and 12, you can enrol your child in writing in a school that offers transitional classes (schakelklassen). A transitional class (schakelklas) is for children who have been living in the Netherlands for less than a year and do not yet speak Dutch. Learning the Dutch language is given a lot of attention. In addition, attention is paid to technical reading and maths, which is tailored to the level that your child has mastered. After one year in a transitional class, your child will transfer to a regular primary school. Transitional education is the responsibility of the municipality. For more information about transitional education and the locations of the transitional schools in Rotterdam, click on the following link: Net in Nederland en naar school | Rotterdam.nl

There are no transitional schools (schakelklassen) for children between the ages of 4 and 6. If your child is under the age of 6, you can register your child in writing at a primary school of your choice. See above: How do I find a school?

What types of schools are there in Rotterdam?

In Rotterdam there are both regular primary schools and schools for special (primary) education. Sometimes children need more support than a reguler primary school can offer. Special needs (primary) education is provided for these children. These schools require an admission certificate (a TLV, ‘toelaatbaarheidsverklaring’). This can be applied for by the parents, the school and the school’s contact person at PPO Rotterdam. For special needs education (SBO, ‘special basisonderwijs’, SO, ‘speciaal onderwijs’), registration in Rotterdam always takes place via the Central Registration Route (‘Centrale Aanmeldroute’).
